How to light a good fire

When delivering logs we're often asked by people with new log burners how to light a fire and how to keep a fire going so if, when we deliver your logs, you'd like some advice just ask in advance and we'll be only too pleased to help.

Start with quality kindling

You won't get a good fire if you try to light the logs (seasoned or not) without some kind of help. Newspaper burns too quickly on its own. Good quality, fast-burning kindling is what we recommend.Light a better fire with our kindling

Use quality seasoned hardwood logs

Make sure that the logs you're burning have been brought inside 24 hours before required so that they have lost as much moisture as possible. Once your kindling's alight, slowly add one log at a time; putting too many logs once will smother the flame. Don't be too hasty to close the log burner doors as the more air you get into the young flames the better.Which logs burn best?

Once the fire's alight, keep it ticking over with quality seasoned logs. Seasoned wood works just like charcoal, if you put a piece of charcoal on a bbq it will smoulder continuously as it's done its burning, that's the nature of the product. Low-grade, unseasoned (green wood or wet wood) will go out quickly. Seasoned logs are best as they just keep the fire ticking over.

Quality seasoned hardwood logs

Typically a firewood delivery from Holts' Logs will consist of hornbeam, ash, sycamore and beech, these are what we call white woods. White woods are what you would ideally want to start your fire with then, once the fire's established, oak logs can be added, oak is a darker wood. Our log deliveries contain a balance of these different log varieties. Oak burns slowly and sycamore burns quickly so we try to season, stack and store our timber and process it in the yard allowing customers a mixed load of firewood.Seasoned logs - air-dried for 2-4 years

Put the white wood on early evening and you'll have a wonderful fire. When you go to bed, shut the stove up, put the dark brown wood on and it will still be warm in the morning.
