Our logging activities take us across a 30 mile radius from our Hertfordshire base.
The wood we source to produce our firewood logs for sale online comes from woodland never further than 30 miles from our base in Harpenden, Hertfordshire.
As Hertfordshire log producers and firewood merchants we are often contacted by large country estates, not all are privately owned as some are owned and managed by local authorities - our effective working radius is within 30 miles of Harpenden. Crown estates, local authorities and privately owned estates are where the sustainable woodland and beautiful trees can be found. We work in managed woodlands that have been considerately managed and farmed for years.
The woods we have behind our farm down in Devon extends to about 30 acres of woodland. Experience tells us what has happened there in years gone by. Timber has been used to build and repair our farmhouse. Families have heated and cooked with wood for 300-400 years. Local woodland was a massively important thing to have and is still today. You can see the human interference with many trees in Devon. Farming and managing woodland is a local affair and people shouldn't be hauling timber across the country simply to burn it - it's a waste of fuel whichever way you look at it.
There are not many local firewood merchants in business and there are certainly not many that strive, as we do, to source and supply logs locally. Years ago, there was probably a firewood merchant on every high street. Given the demand for firewood in more recent years, business is strong; despite how commercially active we like to be we would like to think that demand will never outstrip supply. Certainly that's what's driven the price of hardwood logs up - supply and demand. The Home Counties and the 30 mile radius in which we work has a lot of woodland. If you were to buy your logs from a firewood merchant who sources wood from the top of Scotland, the logs you buy will be sourced from a plentiful supply of trees, however the trees are all softwood and barren. There are few historical woodlands this far north and no hardwoods that make the best logs to burn.
